McLuhan and the Time-Life Effect
Greetings and salutations:
I almost forgot to ask you about your "create a new word" experiences. How did they go? Did folks adopt the words you made up? How long did it take?
Post your experiences so we can all check them out, as we old folks say.
A few final thoughts on McLuhan:
None of what we discussed should suggest that I'm anti-technology. I just want us to explore how these advances change us and the messages we send. That's the key to McLuhan.
He's also known for differentiating between "hot" and "cool" media. Hot media offer a lot of information - we don't have to do much work. A photo, for example. "Cool" media require us to do a lot "filling in of the blanks." Take radio for example: we only get sound. We have to envision the DJ, the band, everything but the sound - that's a lot of work.
More on that Tuesday - On Thursday after class I will distribute the first quiz ON THE BLOG. You'll then EMAIL your answers to me.
Take care - have a good weekend. And thanks for listening to my rants.
